SBI Clerk Selection Process 2026-27

SBI Clerk selection is Prelims → Mains → Local Language Proficiency Test where required. Prelims only shortlists candidates; its marks do not enter final merit. The Mains aggregate decides competitive merit State-wise and category-wise, subject to eligibility and the local-language condition. There is no interview, group exercise or psychometric stage.

Stage 1: Prelims is the screening gate

The Preliminary Examination has 100 questions for 100 marks and is used to shortlist candidates for Mains. Its score does not enter final merit. That changes how it should be approached: the aim is a reliable screening performance, not a heroic attempt count.

Because each section has a separate 20-minute timer, weak question selection in one section cannot be repaired by using spare time from another.

Stage 2: Mains decides the competitive ranking

Mains has 190 questions for 200 marks across General/Financial Awareness, General English, Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning Ability & Computer Aptitude. SBI states that candidates must secure the required aggregate; no individual subject qualifying mark is prescribed under the current structure.

Final merit is drawn State-wise and category-wise on the basis of Mains aggregate, subject to the other conditions of selection. Prelims marks are not added.

This is why waiting for the Prelims result to begin Mains is a poor trade. General/Financial Awareness, larger reasoning sets and Mains-level Quant need continuity.

Stage 3: Local Language Proficiency Test

The local-language stage is different from Prelims and Mains. Candidates who can prove through Class 10 or 12 records that they studied the specified opted local language are exempt.

For other candidates who qualify for provisional selection, the LLPT is conducted before joining. It checks whether the candidate can function in the language of the State/UT applied for. It is qualifying; it is not another competitive marks paper to improve rank.

What is not part of SBI Clerk selection

There is no interview, group exercise or psychometric test in the normal SBI Junior Associate process. Importing SBI PO stages into Clerk preparation creates unnecessary work.

How to think about the whole route

Prepare Prelims for controlled speed and selection. Prepare Mains for depth and stable scoring. Treat LLPT as a genuine job requirement if you do not have school-level proof of the specified language.

A candidate who clears Prelims has earned the right to write Mains; that is not the same as being selected. A candidate who performs well in Mains still has to satisfy eligibility, document and local-language conditions.
