Start with the selection structure
Prelims is a screening stage; Mains decides competitive merit. That one fact should shape the timetable. If all preparation is spent on 60-minute Prelims until the result, the candidate enters Mains with GA and higher-level sets underprepared.
Build the base first
In Quant, make percentages, fractions, ratio, averages and arithmetic relationships automatic enough that calculation does not block interpretation. In Reasoning, learn to represent conditions cleanly before opening cases. In English, regular reading should build comprehension and contextual grammar.
The Banking Legends sequence is useful here: Structure → Base → Interpretation → Calculation. Understand what the question is asking before operating on numbers or cases.
Prepare Prelims for execution
Use exact 20-minute sectional blocks. Learn which questions are quick for you, which are workable with time, and which should be left. Review accuracy together with time; a high attempt count with avoidable negatives is not good execution.
PYQs should be used to understand decisions. After a set, ask what made the question easy or expensive and whether the method would still work under the real timer.
Start Mains before the Prelims result
Keep one or two Mains-level Quant/DI and Reasoning sessions in the week even during Prelims preparation. More importantly, build General/Financial Awareness continuously. Daily current affairs should feed weekly revision; weekly revision should feed monthly retrieval questions.
Mains Reasoning & Computer Aptitude carries 60 marks, so set interpretation and logical accuracy matter. Mains Quant needs deeper reading of DI and arithmetic rather than only faster calculation.
Use mocks selectively
A mock should answer a question about your preparation. If the score dropped, identify whether the cause was concept, interpretation, calculation, selection or GA recall. The next practice block should address that cause.
Giving another mock immediately without reviewing the reason often produces another score, not a correction.
Do not ignore the local-language condition
If your Class 10/12 record does not exempt you, maintain practical contact with the specified local language. Do not wait until provisional selection to discover that reading or writing is weak.
Final phase
Close to Prelims, reduce new material and rehearse the exact sectional clocks. Keep Mains and GA alive in smaller blocks. After the Prelims result, do not restart the Mains syllabus; increase Mains full-paper execution, GA retrieval and the highest-value weak areas.
The aim is not to study the most hours or attempt the most questions. It is to make better decisions consistently under the actual SBI structure.
